Teaching Children
About Money

Learning about money helps children develop their potential and gain the confidence they need to make positive choices in the future. It encourages them to have specific concrete goals and dreams, and to understand how using money wisely can help reach them.

Age-appropriate activities, used consistently over time—many as part of your daily routine—will build a child’s money management knowledge and skills. As in the development of any habit, practice is what is required to become good at money management.

Here are important topics to cover:
  • Understanding money
  • Saving for later
  • Making money last
  • Saving and investing
  • Being a smart shopper
  • Working for a living
  • Sharing with others
  • Daring to dream

There is no one right way to manage money. As a parent, you have your way of managing money and you may have tried other ways over the years. You likely will learn new techniques as you coach your child to develop their own skills in managing money.
