College and Other Post-High School Education/Training

The importance of post-high school education and training increases with every generation. In a world of vast changes in technology and knowledge, a high school education is no longer enough for a young person preparing to be financially self-sufficient.

The options for post-high school education and training are also increasing. Depending on a variety of factors, such as your child’s abilities and interests, your financial resources, and your geographic location, your child can choose from:

  • Two-year colleges
  • Four-year colleges
  • Vocational and trade schools
  • Military service
  • Experiential training programs such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Teach for America

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (www.bls.gov/oco) may be helpful in introducing job descriptions and explaining what preparation is required for different occupations. Another source with helpful hints about choosing a career and finding the best education/training is Mapping Your Future (www.mapping-your-future.org).

The costs of higher education are significant. Savings combined with financial aid and work-study options are a frequent financial package for many young people.
